Horizontal hive

Anyone out there using a horizontal hive? I was wonder how well it worked also where you got it from.

I am now researching a Layens hive for use in the spring.  It is a horizontal hive - more like a Langstroth on its side.  My husband has plans and will be building a few this winter.
