Rhett: so I guess there were there a bit over a month before capped honey would signify?? That they always planned to leave? No Queen?

Just curious from a noob...

Gavin, it doesn't look like they had any capped honey in those combs.  They are very clean.

I do remember your wall bees.  As you've witnessed, honeybees will make hives in some very creative spaces and places.  I got a call last winter from the local feed store.  They had a trailer come in with Arizona hay.  There was a hive in the middle of the stack.  I tried to save the hive, but it was pretty much impossible.  We had single digit nights.  I found the bees dead in a small cluster a few days later.

I'll be checking in on the one Warre hive I have overwintering in early spring and will be adding another package of bees in early May (?) so ,anyone local is welcome as we progress this season

Rhett: I assume they took all the honey with them when they absconded. Perhaps some robbing after they left? I didn't check on the hive everyday, so it was a few days from seeing bees to "what the heck happened...they seemed so happy."

Remember (from last year), I am the guy who thinks of himself as a bee haver vs keeper as I was mostly trying to give my "wall bees" (the bees in our concrete backyard wall that is a horrid spot for bees) a nicer home. But since I now have a hive I guess I am a bee keeper now (sadly without bees...hopefully not for long).

Kris Price, keep us posted!

Gavin, those slats look beautiful.  The queen had a nice brood nest going.  Where's the capped honey?

The comb they left behind....

Yes, since this photo I have moved the hive off those blocks and I'm using a stand. Hoping that helps. I also might have overfed the wild swarm with sugar water. If I get a new swarm I might just feed once, maybe twice, to get them started. I fed the old swarm a few times. I'm sure the ants loved the sugar water.

So...moving hive from tree, putting on stand, less feeding...hoping this helps once I get a new swarm.

Gavin, I don't know if it will help or not, but I've never had an ant problem using our hive stands that are on 4 legs and 18" inches off the ground.  It's possible that you've created too large of a platform making it easier for the ants, plus the hive is pretty low to the ground.  Anyway, it's something to consider.

I have one warre hive i started last year with a wild swarm caught in my back yard...

Sadly they absconded after about 2 months (There were doing great, making comb and such, but I think it was Ants driving them off). I am moving the hive away from a tree and adding some protection from ants...hoping to catch another wild swarm (we get a few around here in Uptown), but if anybody has some nice hearty local bees...well.... :)

photo is old location...moving out from tree where I thought would be nice as it protects from afternoon sun while allowing morning sun to warm hive...but the ants like this site too I guess...
