The last day to apply for the Agricultural exemption is next Friday, February 26, 2021. Some county assessors are closed on Fridays like Torrance County. We are supposed to have until March 1st since the last day of February falls on a weekend, but I am hearing otherwise. Honey bees count as livestock for the exemption. Profile Information

About me:
We are commercial beekeepers. I have been a beekeeper since 1965. We raise bees to sell, produce honey, beeswax and pollen. We sell 500-600 packages, nucs and hives each year. We produce local raw, pesticide free honey, pollen and beeswax.

We are licensed pest control operators specializing in bee removal and termite inspection and treatments.

I was raised on an apple orchard in Belen (1962-Present),(1100 trees, 14 varieties). Our next door neighbor (Mr. Fowler, a mailman) kept about 25 hives of bees on his property. When he died his family gave the bees to us for our orchard. My father and uncle tried unsuccessfully to remove the honey from the hives the first summer and was stung so many times that my father developed an allergy to the stings. Before the age of 14 I became the family beekeeper. I was given lessons by a beekeeper in Peralta that summer and have been keeping bees ever since.

In 2005 our father (Robert Costanza) died. Seeing that all my brothers and sisters (2 brothers and 3 sisters) wanted to be a part of the heritage my parents had started my wife, Louella and I started 120 fruit trees in Edgewood.

Louella and I farm 8 acres, producing fruits and vegetables for the local farm markets. In 2011 we began to concentrate more on Apples, Peaches, Cherries, Plums, Apricots, Strawberries, Asparagus, Melons, Tomatoes, Onions, and Peppers.

We teach beginning and commercial beekeeping in NM, AZ, TX and OK. In the fall we teach elementary students when time permits for Kids, Kows and More in Santa Fe and Torrance County.

Our goal is to build up to 1,000 hives and place them in key locations within Albuquerque and on special farms that produce alfalfa, clover and seed crops that are controlled and managed by the beekeeper.

We believe in sharing the exciting lessons of beekeeping and farming that we have learned over the years and have a strong desire to organize workshops where we can all work together to learn and to build up our businesses.
I use the following type of bee hives:
Top bar, Langstroth
My bee hives are primarily located here (ZIP code):
87002

North American Beekeepers Conference in Galveston, TX (January 4-9)

My wife, Louella and I attended the North American Beekeepers Conference that was held in Galveston the first week of January and have many thoughts and highlites to share with those who may have questions.

The two most important lessons we brought back from the conference that would help all of us is:

    1.  We must feed our bees a protein source when there is no pollen coming in.

     2.  It is critical we re-queen every…

Hi Ed,

You asked if I've found bees for my top bar hives.  Not yet.  I need to buy a couple of swarms and some of the bee keeping equipment.  I might also need more beekeeping classes to get started.  Is spring the best time of the year to get started?

I never did get anything stating that I was accepted to the association.  I started getting emails though so I decided to check it out.  It seems that I have been accepted.  Please check out my website (papabearshoney.com) and let me know what you think.  I finally got it up and running (for the most part).  I will continue to tweak it from time to time.  I ordered 105 - 4 pound packages from Lehi Utah and will pick them up on the 30th of April.  I am doing another seminar on the 26th of March at the LDS Chapel.  I know that is a Saturday and you probably won’t go, however if you have any inputs please let me know and I will add them if I can.

Hello Ed, great suggestion! I'll look into it. That back room doesn't have a projector but I'll ask NMSU if they can change this.

In the meantime, are there other facilities you'd like to suggest?
