My wife and I are just getting started, though we've studied about bees and came close on a number of occasions to starting hives over they years. An acquaintance and mentor inspired us to finally start. I am in the process of building 5 hives in preparation for spring. We'll probably populate 2 or 3 to start with and have the last two on hand for splits. We have a small yard and might be able to comfortably fit 2 or 3 more at most.
We are in northern Rio Rancho and although in a subdivision, not far from open mesa. I'll say hi if I see you at one of the meetings.
Jaymes, I do hope to get another hive next year. I'm on 2&1/4 acres of land and have the room. Also the local neighborhoods have plenty of pollinating vegetation. I have been pleasantly surprised about the number of beekeepers that I run into all over. I was in DC for 2 weeks and got back on Friday. While there, I found there was a beekeeper from SC in my glass. I spent a lot of time talking to him. He has 18 hives.
Haynes, I harvested 4 frames this year. I also added a super as my bees were expanding fast. I really didn't make any effort to winterized them last year. I got them as a swarm in my rental, they have done well in spite of my lack of knowledge. I understand now that I should've inspected them much more this season.
